Farewell, Karma — Or Who Even Needs an iPad?

A skeptical take on Apple's freshly announced iPad tablet from January 2010, questioning its form factor, screen resolution, missing connectivity, and real-world usefulness.

The enthusiastic reaction across your internets regarding the freshly unveiled tablet from Apple is somewhat puzzling to me.

At first glance, the following things are already concerning:

iPad

First, the form factor. You can place a laptop on your lap or set it on any surface and work with it anywhere. That won't fly with a tablet — how are you supposed to hold it, like an artist holds a palette — on your forearm, clamped with your elbow?

Simply holding this ten-inch beast in your hands is unrealistic — even though it looks like a giant iPod, it's still a notebook, not a PDA.

Second — the screen. A resolution of 1024×768 — that's not serious.

Third — where's WiMax? For cities not yet blessed with Yota's presence, this may not be relevant yet.

There's no USB port either, so you can't even use an external modem.

Battery life — 10 hours. Good, but nothing new.

What's left? The price — in the US it starts at $499. Here, of course, it'll be more expensive — but even at 30,000 rubles, Apple's tablet has a chance in our country.

P.S.: Oh, I can feel it — Apple fans are not going to forgive me for this post :-) Farewell, karma!
